Are You Thinking Of Quitting Smoking?

Alright, I don’t want to sound like a nag. You’ve heard it from many people, and now it is my turn to put in my two-cent’ worth. Like the ten-step process, knowing the reasons of why you want to quit is an important first step. Being clear about your reasons, can be a very powerful tool. Without wanting to even quit, you won’t even get anywhere. I’m just saying it as it is, so pardon me for being so blunt.

You have probably seen many articles, telling you how to quit smoking, but without a proper motivation, they are useless. That is why instead of telling you what to do, I will tell you why you should do it and after that, it will be up to you to find the right way. To begin with, here are four reasons why you should quit. Of course, I can’t predict whether any of them are sufficient motivators for you personally.

One: Smoking Can Kill

Each year, smoking kills 5 million people worldwide. Cigarettes contain many harmful chemicals, a few of which include nicotine, tar, acetone and mercury. Nicotine is a stimulant drug – one drop of it can kill a horse. Tar transports chemicals to your bloodstream and is the major cause of lung cancer.

Acetone is an extremely dangerous substance; long-term exposure can cause kidney and liver damage. Mercury is a toxin; long-term exposure can cause brain damage and death.

Two: Smoking Harms Others

Your smoking can harm others. Non-smokers, exposed to second-hand smoke are at risk of many health problems related to direct smoking. When you smoke in public, people around you could experience: dizziness, nausea, headaches, sore throat and eye irritation. Passive smokers have an extremely high risk of heart disease and lung cancer. Each year, 20% of people dying from lung cancer worldwide are passive smokers. Children of smokers have a 70% increased risk of respiratory illnesses and middle ear infection. So come on – be considerate.

Three: Smoking Accelerates Aging

Smoking makes you look older by narrowing the small blood vessels in your skin. Your skin loses its elasticity and shininess; instead, it will look dry, old and wrinkled. Eeeks.

Four: Smoking is Expensive

Not only does smoking damage your health, it is also expensive. Depending on where you live, smoking a pack of cigarettes a day can cost you up to 4000 dollars a year. It is a lot of money that you could spend on something more important in your life. Also think about how much drugs and medical care services would cost you, to get rid of all of the side-effects and illnesses caused by smoking.

So, how does one quit smoking? Just like weight loss, there is no magical solution. Most people find the use of programs to be necessary. While it is possible to simply “quit,” there’s no doubt that smoking is a strong addiction and there’s nothing wrong with seeking some help. Hypnotherapy is option that has worked successfully for many people. But the smoker has to believe both in the need to quit and in the program.

Let’s be realistic for a moment. Don’t expect to walk into the hypnotist’s office a smoker and walk out never again to desire a cigarette. It is a multi-step process. To begin with, the therapist will typically ask questions to evaluate the smoking habit, reasons that it began, and reasons the smoker wants to quit. Only after that will they formulate a plan to help you.

One thing to note though – beware of any free stop smoking programs, even hypnosis. There are usually some hidden fees. Those that “guarantee” results will likely only require that you keep returning for follow-up visits, but will never refund your money. Finally, keep in mind that there is no “magic” stop smoking therapy. Even hypnosis doesn’t work for everyone, and every stop smoking product out there works in conjunction with your own desire to quit.
