Keep Fit While Studying At University

This article was a special request from a blog reader who is about to enter university. Although this is targeted towards the younger demographic, some of the principles in this post may also apply to those who are returning as mature aged students. I mean, youth is in the heart, isn’t it? Here are some of the tips I have for you.

Before I even begin, the first thing you have to be aware of is that going to college is a complete lifestyle overhaul. Not only do you have new friends and possibly a new living environment, a lot of you will be tasting freedom for the first time. Don’t be surprised if this new level of freedom leads to irresponsible behaviours. Most of us adults have been there before anyway.

One of the unfortunate things about college is that despite student poverty, so to speak, a lot of students will eventually gain weight due to an unhealthy lifestyle. Of course, this will vary from individual to individual, but I’m just stating this possibility as a precaution, because in all fairness, it really could happen.

The first thing you should do is make yourself a plan, and keep on refining it. It might be the mature side of me bringing up the old cliché, but if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. If you don’t take time to plan, you could find yourself getting fatter and fatter and not even realise it. The ability to troubleshoot is very important. This is not just with your fitness goals, but with everything else as well. It is part of being an adult.

Your plan should contain elements of diet and exercise. Of course, shameless plug, if you get the Granite Fitness Masterclass today, you’ll have instant access to valuable information about those two elements, as well as the psychology behind it. Anyways, I cannot over-emphasize how important it is to have a plan. If the plan is in front of you, there is some possibility that you will stick to parts of it at least. If you don’t have one, then you won’t. It’s as simple as that.

Let’s talk about exercise first. Think about what types of activities that you love, which involves a fair amount of physical activity. For some of us it could be a team sport. For others, it would be water-based sports like rowing or kayaking. Some people love running or cycling. It could be hiking. Chances are that unless it’s obscure, there is a club you can join in the local student guild. If not, then maybe form one of your own?

Come on, rack your brains and think about this. I absolutely refuse to believe that you do not like anything that has a physical exercise component to it. While you are wondering about this, at least get started with your fitness training regimen. Join a gym if you can. If you truly hate the gym, a resistance band workout would be suitable for you. If you get it from Granite Fitness, it will come with a comprehensive instruction guide. This is of vital importance, because if you don’t know what you’re doing, you’ll never stick to it.

Another thing you can do is walking. Yes, that’s right! Do not underestimate the value of walking, even though it’s usually not intense exercise per se. The good thing about it is that it can accumulate once you get used to it. Remember – if you are new in college, time might be a precious commodity. Make every second count. Walk when you can. It’ll also save you money in the long run. And don’t forget to take the stairs when you can too.

On the note of planning, remember that it has to be realistic. That means that if you have classes that start at eight in the morning, you should plan to wake up before six in order to exercise. While this may be realistic for some, other people are simply not morning people. If you fall into this category, schedule your workout in the evening. But stick to it! That is the most important bit.

Once again, check out the Granite Fitness Masterclass for a detailed plan on how to get in shape and stay that way, even when you are in college. In fact, some of the chapters on nutrition are exactly what you need, especially when you are living on a budget. I’m not going to lie and say it does not take effort, but really, you have to start somewhere, don’t you? And finally, enjoy college! You’ll look back at it with fond memories I’m sure!
