Some Steps You Can Take Towards Happiness – Part One

Alright, we admit, it has been some time since we wrote a piece of psychological “pep talk”, which many of our fan base love. Well, guess what? Today we’ll be going all existential on you with today’s article which is about being happy. Now, we have to be upfront and state that following these steps will not definitely make you happy, but it maximises your chances. Enjoy!

One: Sense Your Feelings

No, we are not trying to start on a melancholic note. All feelings are good to have – it makes us feel human. Feelings are also indicative of an internalised message we are holding on to. Think about it – vices like drinking, smoking and pornography are used to distract ourselves from unpleasant feeling. So yes, the first step is to be aware. Then you can slowly work out what need is not being met.

Two: Self Care

This is one which all of us are guilty of not following. While it is great to be sacrificial and help others at our own expense – to a certain extent, the reality is that if you aren’t well, how would you be able to maximise your effectiveness when helping others? It’s a tough one, isn’t it? Always make sure you take care of yourself first, and then you can take care of others well.

Three: Give What You Can

In the interest of balancing out the point above, it is important to be selfless as well. It is often said that the more you give, the more you will receive as well. Call it karma, the universe, or God, this appears to be true a lot of the time. Giving unconditionally is so satisfying that it can lift your mood too!

Four: Try To Be An Optimist

People are different. Some of us are more inclined to be more positive, while others are naturally pessimistic. However, it is no secret that the more you are able to find the positive in a situation, the more content you’ll be. There is an old saying that nothing is inherently good or bad—what makes it one or the other is merely your reaction to it.

Five: Stick To The Positive Things That Work

Found something positive? Hold on to it! After all, why bother reinventing the wheel? If something positive happens, celebrate it. Find things that make you happy and lift your mood. This is an exercise that requires effort, but don’t shy away from it simply because it requires effort. The end will certainly justify the means here.

Six: Limit The Negativity

Going hand-in-hand with the previous point is this one. There are so many negative things around. Turn on the TV to watch the news and you get firsthand exposure to things that make us upset or angry. Limit your exposure to that. Don’t let your soul be burdened by the ills of humanity, which have been around since forever and will continue to do so.

Now, one last thing. As the title suggests, this is part one of a two-part series on happiness. We didn’t want to stuff everything into one long article, so we have elected to split it up. Implement those above first and wait for the second part of this post to be published. In the meantime, here’s something for you to check out:
